Letters meant to be read for hours.
Westbrook is a small, independent foundry drawing typefaces for books, broadsheets, and the long argument — faces that disappear into the reading and reward the second hour.
Try Halcyon Text with your own words.
Type below, drag the size and weight, and switch to italic. A face only proves itself in someone else’s sentence — so write one.
Why we draw for the second hour.
Halcyon Text · 18 styles · a workhorse serif with a low, even color and an italic that holds its temper at length.
Most type is judged at the size of a billboard and used at the size of a footnote. We think that gets it backwards. A reading face earns nothing in the first glance and everything in the thousandth — when the eye, having forgotten it was reading a font at all, simply keeps going. That forgetting is the whole craft.
Halcyon began as a single lowercase g drawn on the back of a ferry schedule, then redrawn eleven times until its ear stopped catching the light. The counters are open enough to survive cheap paper and a wet press. The serifs are bracketed, not stuck on — they carry the line rather than decorate it. At small sizes the optical axis quietly fattens the strokes so the page keeps an even gray, the color a typesetter would call good water.
We do not make type that shouts. We make type you can live inside.
The italic is the part we argue about most. A reading italic should not lean away from its roman like a stranger; it should be the same voice, dropped half a register. So Halcyon’s italic keeps the roman’s rhythm and borrows just enough cursive in the a, the e, the entry strokes — emphasis you feel before you notice. It is built for the aside, the title, the murmured qualification, not for the headline.
What we will not do is pad a family with weights nobody sets text in. Every style here has been proofed at length, on real paper, against a real argument. If a weight could not hold a paragraph, we cut it. The catalogue is short on purpose.
