Why we’re slow

A note from the drawing table, kept where you can read it.

A typeface is a thousand tiny arguments settled in private. Where the curve leaves the stem. How far the comma sits below the baseline. Whether the g gets one loop or two. We settle them slowly, on paper first, because the reader will never see the work — only feel whether the page is calm. That’s the whole job: to be felt, never noticed.
