BASALT CLUB FC

Founded 1921.
Dressed like it matters.

A football club from a black-sand harbour of 900 people, cut from the same hexagonal stone as the cliffs behind the goal. We defend narrow, we press early, and we have never once walked out in a kit we were not proud to be buried in.

Home Basalt — black body, gold sash, worn with black shorts.

The Atelier

Since the 2019 rebuild, every Basalt kit has been cut by Frakkur, a two-person tailoring house above the old net loft on Bryggjuvegur. The sash is set at 114 degrees — the pitch of the columns at Reynisfjara — and the numerals are the same block the club painted on fish crates in 1921.

Cloth210gsm hex-weave jacquard, knitted in Como; the honeycomb only shows when the floodlights hit it.
CollarTailored V with a grosgrain ribbon inside the neck, stamped BFC 1921. No crew necks. Ever.
NumeralsClub-cut block, heat-set, gold on home shirts. The 9 has not been reissued since 1987 — until now.
CareCold wash, hang in sea air. Bloodstains from the Whale Road derby are considered patina.

The Standing

Set in numerals big enough to read from the cliff top. The margin is two points and one very cold October.

The Colonnade

Eleven columns hold the cliff up. These six hold us up. Names read bottom-to-top, the way the stone grew.

"We wear the town. The least we can do is win in it." — captain, centre-forward, Vík-born. 118 goals since 2018, one for every metre of the cliff.

Why we dress like this
"A club is a garment the whole town wears. You do not send nine hundred people out in something careless."

Basalt FC was founded on 3 April 1921 by eleven dockworkers and one tailor, Jón Ásgeirsson, who refused to sew the first shirts until the club agreed, in writing, that black and gold would never be changed by any committee. The clause survives. So does the shirt.

1921

Founded on the quay. First match played on packed black sand at low tide; abandoned when the tide came in, 2–1 up.

1948

First title. Won at Whale Road with ten men. The gold sash is added to the shirt the following spring.

1974

The Hexagon opens. Six stands, 11,000 places, cut into the cliff itself. Away keepers still complain about the shadow.

1993

Nearly gone. Saved from liquidation by 2,114 shareholders — the town's whole adult population, plus one lighthouse.

2019

The Frakkur rebuild. Kits move to the atelier on Bryggjuvegur. Shirt sales triple. Results, oddly, follow.

2026

Top of Division One. Unbeaten at home since March 2025. Five matches from a fifth star nobody here will call inevitable.
